Usage Based OR Burst Pricing APM License Model

Hi Team,

I am needing help from license and pricing model experts.

We have a client that we are trying to provide a license pricing model that will meet their strict budget restriction and still provide adequate monitoring visibility. At a later stage this can be scaled up.

At this stage we want to find out what are the license options that AppDy can issue, before we approach the channel partner with specifics and quotes.

They have 4 agents deployed but wanting to find out a few license model options before figuring out how many more they need.

Q1:

Can a single agent (java) be configured to turn on and off at certain times of the day rather than continuosly be monitoring ?. Hence charged accordingly (usage hrs) rather than paying a flat fee.

Q2:

following on from Q1, can a java agent be bundled into a  license pool be available on standby(configured but turned off). License fee is charged if and only when agent actively monitors?

Situation: there are 6 nodes that make up a tier. even with load balancing, one of the 6 nodes has performance issues now and then, and there is no need to monitor all 6 nodes at the same time all the time. The idea is to turn on and off the agent configured in one of the nodes if performance issue is suspected on that node.

Q3: My understanding is that java agent includes both Application and host monitoring components. are these two components configurable individually so you can turn on and off host monitoring component for example!

These questions is find out if the license agents are charged by their use (per hr) rather than paying flat fee, as most times these agents do not need to actively monitor 24 by 7.

There is a MS-SQL database and a DB agents needs to be configured and turned on 24 by 7.

Greatly appreciate your response.

Best Regards

Adrian

Its better to get in touch with AppD Sales Team on pricing models.

Q1:

Can a single agent (java) be configured to turn on and off at certain times of the day rather than continuosly be monitoring ?.

JVM Agent are attached to the application. If the application goes down, the agents will be down. Also you can do dynamic attachment of agents if required.

Q2:

following on from Q1, can a java agent be bundled into a license pool be available on standby(configured but turned off).

You can define rules to allocate licenses https://docs.appdynamics.com/display/PRO44/License+Management#LicenseManagement-CreatingRulesCreatin...

Q3: My understanding is that java agent includes both Application and host monitoring components. are these two components configurable individually so you can turn on and off host monitoring component for example!

There is a basic/legacy server monitoring license included with an application agent (Best to check with your AppD Team). For Java APM, machine Agent installed seperately as a standalone machine agent (windows/linux service) with no application or tier name defined. https://docs.appdynamics.com/display/PRO44/Standalone+Machine+Agent+Installation+Scenarios#Standalon...

Re: Usage Based OR Burst Pricing APM License Model

Hi Alakshya, Thank you so much for providing your thoughts and inputs. Greatly appreciated. Do you have email details for AppDy technical team that you have used and got response? Some of these questions are technical by nature. I will then follow up with sales team on licensing. Needing confirmation on Q1) from your experience. The application will always be running. I am not sure whether the agent can be configured to turn OFF (stops monitoring) or ON (start monitoring). it does not have to monitor all the time! dynamic attachments avoid server and application service restarts during installation. Not an issue if you are not sure, I will raise this to technical team, an email address will be brilliant! Thanks Adrian

Re: Usage Based OR Burst Pricing APM License Model

Hi Adrian,

The java agent can be disabled from the controller user interface but they will still be running as long as the application is up. The only way to completely stop them would be to stop the application and remove the agent configuration in application (as applicable). Also disabled agent will still consume license. Refer https://docs.appdynamics.com/display/PRO44/Manage+App+Agents#ManageAppAgents-EnableandDisableAppAgen...

You can reach out to AppD sales/account team who should be able to point you to the technical team for any specific queries that you have. You can also refer licensing entitlements in  https://docs.appdynamics.com/display/PRO44/License+Entitlements+and+Restrictions
