Can a single agent (java) be configured to turn on and off at certain times of the day rather than continuosly be monitoring ?.
JVM Agent are attached to the application. If the application goes down, the agents will be down. Also you can do dynamic attachment of agents if required.
following on from Q1, can a java agent be bundled into a license pool be available on standby(configured but turned off).
You can define rules to allocate licenses https://docs.appdynamics.com/display/PRO44/License+Management#LicenseManagement-CreatingRulesCreatingCustomRules
Q3: My understanding is that java agent includes both Application and host monitoring components. are these two components configurable individually so you can turn on and off host monitoring component for example!
There is a basic/legacy server monitoring license included with an application agent (Best to check with your AppD Team). For Java APM, machine Agent installed seperately as a standalone machine agent (windows/linux service) with no application or tier name defined. https://docs.appdynamics.com/display/PRO44/Standalone+Machine+Agent+Installation+Scenarios#StandaloneMachineAgentInstallationScenarios-APMMachineAgentInstallation
